The Electrical Distribution System

Length: 35 minutes
Subscription: 1 month - 12 months
Cost: $69 - $89
Prerequisites: None
This course explains the components of the distribution system and the way in which the system delivers power to end-use customers. This course is also included in the Electric System Fundamentals learning path.

What you will learn:

  • The key components of the distribution system and the function of each component
  • The different types of distribution lines, how they are laid out, and why each is used
  • How the distribution system is designed to balance reliability and cost

Following is a more detailed outline of content contained in the Electrical Distribution System online course.

Course content:

  • The role of distribution in the electric system
  • Overview of the electric distribution system layout
  • Electric distribution substations
  • Electric distribution lines (overhead and underground, single phase and three phase, wye and delta)
  • Advantage and disadvantages of each electric distribution line option
  • Other electric distribution components (lightning arrestors, voltage regulators, line and service fuses, reclosers, capacitor banks)
  • Electric distribution system design (how primary and secondary feeds are used and laid out)
  • Types of secondary feeds (radial, dual feed, loop and network)
  • How electric distribution systems are designed to balance cost and reliability objectives
  • Service transformers
